An Arkansas high school science teacher resigned after it was discovered that he made racist comments online about President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.

Trent Bennett, who taught at Malvern High School southwest of Little Rock, commented on KTHV-TV’s Facebook page Dec. 24 and referred to the first lady as “Michelle Obummer…America’s First Chimp.”

He also said he was “glad to see that nasty chimp and her spider monkey hubby gone for good,” KTHV reported.

The school district released a statement Dec. 26 on Malvern High School’s Facebook page that said it was aware of the “inappropriate, insensitive” and “racially charged” online comments by a district employee.

“In no way are these posts reflective of the District,” the statement said. “The District is currently investigating the matter and due to privacy laws and regulation are not able to comment specifically on the details related to the investigation.”

The school board had a special meeting Thursday night where it unanimously accepted Bennett’s resignation, effective immediately.

Below is the letter Bennett sent to students, according to KARK-TV:

I would like to issue an apology for the outrage and hurt feelings caused by these comments. I acknowledge that they were disrespectful and offensive. I am aware of the impact this has had, and though I negate that I have ever conducted myself in a less than professional manner in regard to my students, I have resigned my teaching position at Malvern High School. I have also removed my social media presence to prevent any future issues. I am unavailable for further statements or interviews, and humbly ask for everyone to respect the privacy of my family, friends, and former colleagues.
