90yo woman lives alone after son dies, asks neighbors to be her friend with tearful note
Marleen Brooks was coming home from work one day when she noticed a strange letter in her mailbox. She opened the letter and was delighted to learn that it had come from a kind old lady that lived at the end of her street – Wanda.
When she read the note, her heart broke.
Wanda had been so lonely that she thought to reach out to Marleen and as her to be friends.
The following evening, Marleen whipped up some cupcakes and went to her neighbor’s house to properly introduce herself.
The two had a lovely evening getting to know one another.
After that, Marleen contacted a man by the name of Frank Somerville, an employee at KTVU News to tell him her story and update him on how their first meeting went.
“She’s such a sweet lady, and she was over the moon when we came over,” she wrote.
“Wanda said – ‘I hope you didn’t think I was stupid for writing you, but I had to do something. Thank you so much for coming over. I’ve lived here for 50 years and don’t know any of my neighbors,’” she continued.”
Throughout the night Marleen also learned that Wanda had three sons, however one passed away last year and the other two live very far away.
Given her advanced age, she also told Marleen that she is on oxygen and also has congestive heart failure and osteoporosis among other things.
Before Marleen left she made sure Wanda knew she could call her at any time and reassured her that she’d be back for a visit very soon.
“I’m sure Wanda and I will have some great times,” she wrote.
Since then, this beautiful story of friendship has been shared by hundreds of people on social media.
